Who Am I Becoming? One Word to Clarify Your Identity This Year

Every year, I love making goals.

In the early days of my ‘goal planning’ frenzy, I’d make goals for my marriage. Goals for homeschooling. Things I wanted to accomplish, experiences I wanted to create, the kind of mom I wanted to be. I’m a dreamer — a visionary — and a blank January felt like an invitation to imagine everything at once.

The problem? I kept setting myself up to fail.

And I wasn’t just any person walking away from an unfinished goal list. I was a young mom who already wrestled with the plaguing whisper of never enough. So when the goals crumbled — and they always did, somewhere around February — it didn’t just feel like failure. It felt like confirmation of every doubt I already carried.

Maybe you know that particular ache.

Then, years into my journey, I was introduced to something called the One Word vision idea. And honestly? It quietly revolutionized everything. Not because it gave me a new system to manage, but because it shifted the entire question — from what can I do? to who am I becoming? That’s a vision you can actually invite God into.

Why Resolutions Keep Failing (And It’s Not Your Fault)

And of those who do set New Year’s resolutions, roughly 75% have abandoned them before February ends.

That’s not a willpower problem. That’s a framework problem.

The resolutions we make at the start of a new year are often really just last year’s confessions wearing hopeful clothing.

• I want to be more present with my kids = I’ve been distracted and I feel guilty about it.
• I want to get healthy this year = I’ve been running on fumes and ignoring my body.
• I want to grow in my faith = I’ve felt disconnected from God and I miss Him.

There’s nothing wrong with wanting those things. But sweeping promises — the “I will never again” kind — don’t give us traction. They give us a starting line and no map.

So what if instead of doing nothing about everything, we chose to do something about one thing?

The Legacy You’re Already Leaving

Here’s the thing no one says out loud enough: you are already leaving a legacy.

Whether you feel like it or not, the people in your home are watching you. Your kids are watching. Your husband is watching. The women around you are watching. We don’t get to opt out of influence — we only get to decide what kind.

A personal legacy isn’t reserved for people at the end of their lives. It’s being built quietly in the daily moments — the way you respond when you’re depleted, the way you show up when it’s hard, the woman your kids see when they look at you on an ordinary Tuesday.

A ONE WORD goal helps you take the wheel on that legacy — intentionally.

Here’s what ONE WORD can do that a resolution never will:

• It becomes a vision to move toward — not a promise you have to keep.
• It determines the impression you leave on the people who matter most.
• It removes the overwhelming list of to-dos and replaces it with a lens.

• It’s about who you’re BE-coming — not what you can produce or perform.
• It lets you name the character traits you want to develop, not just the outcomes you want to achieve.
• It’s about being transformed — the kind of deep, root-level change that actually sticks.

As Paul wrote in Philippians 3:13-14 — “forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” One direction. One focus. Not a hundred things — one thing.

✨ DISCOVER Your One Word

Sometimes your word finds you before you go looking for it.

Pay attention. What word keeps showing up — in what you’re reading, what you’re praying, what you keep circling back to? That noticing is often the Holy Spirit’s gentle nudge toward the direction you’re already being called.

For others, it takes a little more intentional crafting. Here’s a simple process to find yours:

1. Imagine yourself at the end of this year. Write a short paragraph about what the people who love you most would say. What do they notice about you? What has changed?
2. List 6–8 words or phrases that describe this version of you. Don’t overthink it — write what comes.
3. Write your “I AM” statement in the present tense, as if it’s already true. I am patient. I am present. I am rooted.
4. Narrow the list. From all those characteristics, what 1–3 words begin to capture the whole picture?
5. Ask yourself: What impact would living from this word have on how I see my life — my marriage, my kids, my calling?
6. Choose. What is the ONE WORD you want to be known by at the end of this year?

🚧 DEFINE Where You Are Right Now

Before you can map a direction, you need an honest look at where you’re standing.

Take a moment to assess the different areas of your life — your faith, your marriage, your health, your friendships, your work, your emotional well-being. Not with judgment, but with grace. This isn’t about cataloguing everything you’re doing wrong. It’s about getting honest enough to know where you need the most room to grow.

Once you’ve identified the area you most want to grow in:

• Define some practical, grace-filled steps that move you toward your “I AM” statement.
• Put those steps somewhere you’ll actually see them — your calendar, your planner, your notes app.
• Find one person who can ask you about your word. Accountability isn’t about performance. It’s about not wandering alone.

Research shows that people who write their commitments down and share weekly progress with someone are significantly more likely to follow through — some studies put that number as high as 76%. You weren’t designed to do this alone.

🛠 DEVELOP a Plan That Actually Moves With You

Here’s what I’ve learned the hard way: ONE WORD takes commitment — and life will test it.

There have been years I chose my word with all the intention in the world, wrote it beautifully on a card, and then put it on a shelf and forgot about it. Those are the years I wandered. Aimlessly. Spinning in the same familiar ruts, wondering why nothing felt different. A little like the Israelites in the desert — not because they lacked direction, but because they stopped walking toward it.

Display it. Write it on your bathroom mirror. Put a sticky note on your dashboard. Make it your phone wallpaper. Make it so visible that you can’t accidentally forget who you’re becoming. Your subconscious is shaped by repetition — what you see, you begin to move toward.

Meditate on it. Find a scripture that speaks to your word and sit with it. Let it become a journal prompt. At the end of each week, write about one moment where you had a chance to live from your word — and what happened.

Check in on it. Find an accountability partner. Schedule a quarterly review right now — put it on your calendar before you close this tab. Use your word in conversation. Let it be the lens through which you evaluate your month.

Here’s what I want you to sit with for a moment.

You are not just a mom. Not just a wife. Not just a business owner or leader or the person keeping everyone’s lives running. You are a woman with a God-given identity that existed before those roles and will exist long after the seasons change.
