It moves in slowly. Quietly. You don’t notice it at first.
One pile becomes two. One unread email becomes two hundred. One skipped conversation with your husband becomes a week of ships passing in the night. And somewhere in the middle of managing everyone else’s everything, you realize your own mind feels like a browser with forty-seven tabs open — and none of them are loading.
That’s clutter. And it doesn’t just live in your junk drawer.
We usually picture clutter as physical — the counter you can’t find under the mail, the playroom that somehow explodes every single morning. But clutter is sneaky. It gradually moves into every corner of your life until you find yourself buried in it:
That last one? That’s the one I battle most.
When I had four children, a job, a home, homeschooling, and ministry all running simultaneously, I used to tell my kids: “The folders in my brain are full. Please don’t expect me to remember what you are responsible for — because if you hand me one more thing, something already in there will fall out.”
I think in sticky notes. Always have.
But here’s what I’ve learned: the mental clutter doesn’t just make you forgetful. It makes you fragmented. And a fragmented mom is a frustrated mom. I watched it play out in my own home in a cycle so predictable it could have been a flowchart:
Chaos in the house
resulted in chaos in my mind,
which resulted in a frustrated mom,
which resulted in yelling,
which resulted in more chaos in the house.
You get the picture.
In 1998, my husband left. And in the wreckage of that season, I found myself doing something I had never really done before — learning who I actually was.
I had married young. My entire adult life had been poured into being a wife and mother. I had never taken the time to explore the heart of God for me — who He made me to be, what I valued, what I needed. The journey that followed was full of trial and error. Beautiful and painful in equal measure.
De-cluttering my mind became one of the most important parts of that journey — for me and for my kids.
I began to understand that the state of my inner world was directly shaping the atmosphere of my home. And if I wanted peace on the outside, I had to start building it on the inside first.
Here’s what changed everything for me: I stopped trying to manage the clutter and started asking why certain things mattered so much.
Determining your values is the first and most important step toward a de-cluttered life. Not someone else’s values — yours. Because the rhythms you build need to be built around what you actually care about, not what you think you’re supposed to care about.
For me, a few things were non-negotiable:
These weren’t Pinterest standards. They were my values — the specific things that, when tended to, gave my mind enough peace to function well.
What are yours? It’s worth sitting with that question. When you know what you value, you know where to focus your energy — and where to give yourself grace to let things go.
Once you know your values, you can identify which areas of clutter are creating the most friction in your daily life.
Start with one. Just one.
For me, mealtime was the highest-friction area — so that’s where I started. Over the years I found a few rhythms that tamed the chaos without consuming my whole life:
The goal was never a perfect kitchen. It was a peaceful one.
De-cluttering isn’t a one-time event. It’s a rhythm — a small, repeated practice that keeps the clutter from quietly moving back in.
And here’s the beautiful thing: God is not indifferent to your clutter. He actually wants to help.
“But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” (James 1:5)
He wants to make a home in your mind, your emotions, and your living spaces. But He needs you to invite Him in — and ask Him for the creative, practical wisdom to clear the way.
A new year — or a new season — is the perfect time to open the windows of your heart, your home, and your mind, and let the breath of God come through and sweep it clean.
A few simple ways to start:
Want to go deeper on this? Listen to my conversation with Brandis Phelan on the podcast: Episode 35 : A New Way To Declutter That Leads To True Freedom — we talk about exactly what it looks like to de-clutter your life from the inside out.
De-cluttering produces peace. And peaceful homes give space for something rare and precious — healthy relationships.
When the noise quiets, you can finally hear your kids again. When the mental tabs start closing, you can be present with your husband instead of just physically in the same room. When the emotional clutter gets processed instead of buried, you start to feel like yourself again — not just a function, not just a role, but a whole, breathing, alive woman.
That’s what’s waiting on the other side of the clutter.
If de-cluttering sounds overwhelming, or you genuinely don’t know where to start — that’s exactly what I’m here for.
A Free Clarity Call is the perfect first step. Together we’ll look at where the clutter is costing you the most, uncover your values, and start building a simple, sustainable plan that actually fits your life and your season.
You don’t have to figure this out alone. And you don’t have to do it all at once.
