Hey mom, cue the confetti. you made it through Christmas and now right around the corner. That that, that the is the new year. I mean, who decided to stack all these big major holidays together? At the end of the year. I don’t think they were thinking about you. Or me and our role as mom. When they designed the calendar that we now live by. You know, last year or, I mean this year 20, 24, I guess.
The new year, just snowballed upon me and I was nowhere ready for a new year to begin. So, you know what I did, I made an executive decision that for me, my year would start in February.
And if that’s the case, I’m only on month 11 and I have a whole nother month. To catch up and start my planning for a new year. But truth be told. I took a back seat to holiday things this December. So I’ve had more capacity to begin to consider what my intentions are for 2025. Now I haven’t come up with that one word or that one word hasn’t dropped in my lap. I don’t have my top four goals written out for quarter number one But I have started to think about it and compile a list of questions that are important to me as I began to plan for a new year I’ve always made planning a priority. I believe whole heartedly. In this statement, what gets on the calendar gets done?
I want to spend the next few weeks on mom to mom mentoring. Empowering you to begin to consider. What is important to you for the year ahead?
I’m really excited about next week’s episode because My mom, mentor friend. Brandis will be on as my guest. In helping us understand decluttering. But Brandice has a whole different twist on decluttering than what you might think about. We’re going to talk about what it looks like and what it means to declutter our mind, to declutter our spirit and so much more.
You’re not going to want to miss next week’s episode.
Now just a heads up. I’m not a big advocate of the idea of setting and achieving goals. Especially for busy moms who are trying to do all the things. But I do believe in. Taking time to consider who you want to become the type of life that you’d like to be leading six months a year from now, I’m the creative sort and it helps me too. I see something Instead of having a prayer list I often have things on my nightstand or things around my house that remind me of someone. Or something that would trigger me to pray for them. I’m just a very visual person. So I love the idea of creating a vision board.
But beyond that, I love the idea of envisioning my future self.
I begin to capture a vision for the future. Me that I can start working on. In the present day. we start with the end in mind and work back from there. I know it’s so hard.
as a busy mom to try to even take time. To think about. Six months or a year from now We lived in Monroe, Michigan. And my oldest daughter went to preschool at Mrs. Douglas’s house. It was [00:04:00] the perfect preschool experience. Mrs. Douglas operated this preschool out of her home three days a week. I couldn’t believe we got Megan into this wonderful little community. Mrs. Douglas had kids in high school at the time. But I imagined her to be the perfect mom in all seasons of life. I really looked up to her and admired her. Not only as a teacher. But as a mom and a wife. Once as if in passing, she said that her family ate dinner together every night. Now, this was very shocking to me because I knew her kids were very busy and she was busy. I asked her, how do you do that?
She said sometimes it’s 8:00 PM before we have the time to gather around the table. She said, but that connection time was so valuable to her and the family that it was a non-negotiable and her kids and her husband knew it. Over the years I would adopt this non-negotiable mealtime. For our family. Honestly, I think it was a part of our saving grace that kept us connected when the storms sought to overtake and drown us. Some days.
It was the only time that I saw the face of my oldest daughter, Megan. You see, when her dad left, she closed the door to her bedroom and her heart. But that mealtime. And our yearly vacations somehow helped us maintain some kind of connection. I don’t think This value started with Mrs. Douglas. I think she just reminded me of it. It started years before with my beautiful aunt, Shirley, who is still a role model for me. And it surely is 86 years old. She’s still gardening, walking, loving her family and others. She is absolutely amazing. Maybe in 2025, I’ll get my aunt Shirley on mom to mom, mentoring to bless all of you. Like she always blesses me. Wouldn’t that be a treat? Anyway, as a child growing up in a single mom, family, I loved visiting aunt Shirley and uncle Jay. As a stay at home mom, she always had something wonderful baking.
She had projects going on. Her home was orderly. And there was. Plenty of space. for fun and excitement. I love the feeling of being cared for in a peaceful space. And having good things, good conversation and laughter around the table. And I got that at my aunt and uncle’s house. What about you? What’s important for you to cultivate in your home. What’s your non-negotiable.
Hey there.
Welcome to mom to mom mentoring. I’m excited to be your guide today, as we dive into an essential topic. For all you busy Christian working moms. How to guard your heart and live according to your values, especially as you consider a new year. I’m Misty Hughes your celebration coach. Happiness adviser, gratitude guide and mum mentor. I’m here to help you shine brightly as you step into 2025. Fully prepared to say yes to what truly matters to you and let go of the things that hold you back. Knowing your values will help you live your best year. living true to who you are created to be empowers you to shine. And because I believe in the value of knowing your values. I’m putting on a free value, your values workshop. During this workshop, I’ll walk through discovering your top five values. Defining how they are showing up in your lives and developing one thing you can do in 2025 to live lead and love more fully and freely from the [00:08:00] wellspring of an overflowing heart. Who that word, wellspring.
What does it even mean? And why might it be important to consider?
Proverbs 4 23 says, guard your heart. For it is the wellspring of life. What does that even mean to guard your heart?
You might think it means to put walls up or boundaries around your heart? To be on guard and protect your heart no matter what the cost. Which I’ve been very good at in the years past. But it’s really about nurturing your inner self. Your inner self is the seat of your passions, your thoughts, your gifts and intentions.
Think about what it looks like to ideally nurture your young child. Care for them. Feed them. Good things. Protect them watch over them.
That’s what we’re invited to do here. When it says to guard our own hearts, we want to feed it good substance. Like the word of God. Because beloved, that is the source of life. To you, and is. The life-giving essence that you give out to others. This passage always makes me think of that song That I used to sing in Sunday school and youth group. Spring up. Oh, well, within my soul. Spring up. Oh, well, and make me whole. Spring up. Oh, well, and give to me that life abundantly.
See, there’s a deep, well within you. That longs to break forth, to spring up and splash over not only you, but also those that you.
are close to. AKA your children, your husband, your immediate family, and close friends.
When your wellspring is flowing freely from a pure place. You are able to respond instead of react. You’re able to take ownership instead of be the victim. You’re able to show up with confidence. rather than from an insecure place that can sometimes show up as jealousy. When your wellspring is flowing freely, You are courageous and proactive. Rather than being passive.
Unfortunately. Your wellspring and mine gets clogged up. full of all the debris from last fall or Christmas, you know, the leftover wrappings from the holidays, the unspoken things, the. Feeling bloated from not eating or exercising. Right? the tension that was left because somebody didn’t get the right present.
Anyway, these things can clog up art wellspring. You might be feeling that your inner source of life is literally stopped up by rocks and walls that you’ve built and others have thrown at you. Your wellspring might not be flowing freely. It might even be polluted from from past trauma. and as a mom of amazing human beings, You’re not showing up in the way that you want to.
You know, it’s a proven fact. That most women tend to hold back.
Perhaps your wellspring is just fine. But in the past, it’s come out strong, like a fire hose, and people have said it’s too much and shut you down. As a passionate Hispanic women, I’ve spent a lifetime trying to withhold, worried that I was too much, that my ideas were too overwhelming
That my passion was intimidating to others. Perhaps you’ve been told, oh, you’re too much. So you’ve tried to dim your lights. But, you know what. It’s exhausting. Trying to withhold who you really are. And I’m determined. To help you shine forth and not hide your light. I’m not sure why we spend our [00:12:00] lives trying to fit in. When we are created, you are created. I’m created. To stand out and shine, like a brilliant star. Mom. You are invited to shine like a star in the midst of a dark and perverse generation. Now your shine will look different from her shine and my shine, but we all are created and invited to shine Now, if you are ready to start shining more brightly. Be sure to sign up for my free. value your values online workshop.
Just go to mom, to mom, mentoring.com. Backslash values, but I’ll include the link in the show notes as well. Now mom, before you dive headfirst into the shallow waters of 2025. And bust your head wide open. I would like to invite you. To take a moment to prepare. And assess the state of your individual wellspring.
It won’t take long. And if you’re driving or folding laundry or wrestling the kids to the ground, you can think about this reflection while you’re doing something else. It does work best.
If you give your mind a few minutes to sit in stillness and think, evaluate and give thought to your attitudes and desire. But as a busy mom, I know that time is a precious commodity. I’d like you to think about the three best things that have happened to you this past quarter. It might be gathering with friends.
It might be that day that you got to go get a massage. It might be. Having meals, prepped or meals brought to you? It might be a romantic dinner with your husband. It might be you achieved your end of the year goal for something in your business, whatever it is. I want you to think about three of those things that happened in the past quarter.
You got him just grab the first three that come to mind again, this is just a quick exercise and you can come back to it later.
If you want to spend more time thinking about it. Now. Ask yourself. Why were they so good? Why did I appreciate that? Why was that important to me? If you’re able to journal, go ahead and do so. Knowing your, why will be so important? As you move forward.
Next. Make a note of. What you’re feeling in the moment of that good situation. As that memory came back to mind that romantic dinner or that time with family and friends. How did you feel? What were the feelings that you were feeling in that moment? Doesn’t it feel good to take a moment and remember the good and sit there, feeling the feelings. And getting in touch with why that was important to you.
I invite you. To take a deep breath.
Or five.
Most likely these three things that you chose. And why they were important. Gives you a peek into what you value, In 2010, I had a friend who was always pointing me to values. Tina was a coach and came to share at the nonprofit I had started for single moms. The title of her message was. Power up with your values. As she unpacked, what values are I was mesmerized. I realized that by God’s saving grace, I had identified and had been raising my kids. By some very important values. But gaining clarity on them gave me even more strength to say yes to the things that were important. And gave me freedom to [00:16:00] let go. Uh, people pleasing. Can you cue the angelic choir for that one? You see your values reflect what is important to you in your life? They are often referred to As your personal guiding principles. Values guide your behavior in all aspects of your life. Including your home life, your work. And your social life. Most of the disruption.
Most of the overwhelm comes when we are not honoring our own values. When we’re trying to people please, or when we’re just taking on more than what we know is humanly possible.
I am always evolving and learning. Since that time, years ago, I’ve practiced knowing my own values and I’ve helped. Hundreds of women discover their values as well. I’m still on the road to discovery and getting married made me confront another major value that I’d never taken into account, but the knowledge of this value has brought a measure of peace. To our family vacations. my husband and I took a vacation in the mountains of Colorado, in 2021.
Towards the end of our time there, which was beautiful. And we had gone on long walks and hikes and just enjoy the serenity But as the days were coming to a close. I was unsettled and even unhappy. I felt like we were missing something and I was a little disgruntled. I couldn’t figure it out. Finally. I realized what was going on. We hadn’t had a big adventure. We hadn’t made the decision to incorporate something different, something new, something spectacular in our time away. So. We found this amazing zip-lining tour across canyons and repelling
That vacation and that awareness has made every other trip that we take. Less stressful. We go into each trip now asking the question. What is that big Adventure. What is that thing that we can do that. it’s not the norm for our regular life. You see, we’re not always aware of our values.
I wasn’t aware of this value.
But knowing what they are can help you make decisions that are right for you. Your business and your family. Knowing your values can help you live from that wellspring of life. And we’ll help you guard your heart. Identifying and understanding your values is a challenging and important exercise. You see your personal values are a central part of who you are, your God DNA. And they help guide you into who you want to become. Knowing and understanding your personal values will launch you into an amazing 2025. Filled with moments of success that you and others can celebrate. I’d like to invite you to take a next step on this journey.
